Sachet vs. Loose Leaf Tea

What is a sachet? Is it the same as a tea bag?

Sachets are single use, high quality filter pouches (ours are made with unbleached plant fiber) filled with a portion of loose whole leaf or higher quality tea. They tend to be larger than a tea bag, allowing for adequate water circulation and infusion, resulting in a better flavor tea.

Tea bags are made from low grade paper, and typically contain smaller tea leaves/pieces. They are often associated with mass-produced, lower-end teas.

Are all bags created equal?

No. There are many differences.

Let’s start with packaging: tea bags can come with a metal staple holding the top together, a string, a tag, individual outer wrapping, or in a tin. Many commercial mass-produced bags contain microplastics that break down in hot water. Bags or outer packaging materials made with plastic will not be compostable.

Size and shape: Size and shape can differ. It is important that the tea inside the bag has enough room to fully expand, move, and infuse. If it is too crowded you will not experience the full flavor of the tea.

Loose leaf or Sachets?

The key difference between loose leaf tea and tea sachets lies in the freedom of the tea leaves to expand and the overall tea experience. Tea Sachets are a fantastic choice for the person who is on the go, in a rush, is new to tea, or is overwhelmed by the equipment required to brew loose leaf tea. All the consumer needs to do is put a sachet in a mug and pour some hot water over it. When steeping is complete, the sachet can be thrown away.

Loose leaf tea is a perfect choice for someone who wants to customize the strength of the brew, who wants to ensure maximum flavor is infused from the leaves, who wants the meditative experience of seeing the tea expand and infuse into the water, or who wants to reduce any added packaging materials.

We are so excited to offer both options to you!
